Bogotá ★
The high-altitude Andean capital, the Gold Museum, and a lively historic center
A city of Colombia
🗓️ Best time to visit
December-March and July-August are relatively drier; the climate stays cool-mild year-round (14-19°C) due to the 2,640m altitude — always carry warm layers.
📸 Top activities & landmarks
- The colorful colonial La Candelaria district
- The Gold Museum (the world's largest pre-Columbian gold collection)
- Monserrate mountain overlooking the city
- The Botero art museum
- The Salt Cathedral of Zipaquirá (day trip)
🏨 Where to stay
La Candelaria for history and walkable daytime sightseeing; Zona T or the north for modern hotels and a safer evening nightlife scene.
⚠️ Tips & warnings
Dedicate the first day to resting off altitude discomfort before any strenuous activity like the Monserrate climb — your body needs to adjust to 2,640m.
📍 On the ground
Getting around: The TransMilenio bus rapid transit system covers the whole city but gets very crowded at rush hour. Uber and inDrive are more comfortable and safer for visitors, especially at night. The airport is 30-45 minutes from downtown depending on traffic.
Halal & prayer places: Limited — the Istanbul Mosque and Islamic Center, plus one Pakistani restaurant reported near the Alhambra shopping center. Research in advance or use HalalTrip.
Local safety: Relatively safer than Colombia's general reputation along its tourist track, but pickpocketing is common in La Candelaria and Zona Rosa in the evening; avoid hailing random street taxis at night — use Uber or inDrive exclusively after dark.
Cost figures: 2026 prices: the Monserrate cable car round trip ~$8, the Gold Museum free on Sundays, a meal in La Candelaria $5-12, downtown hotels $30-90/night.
